What are we doing?
The Tasmanian Government is committed to investing in dedicated crisis accommodation for women, and women with children, affected by family violence. Under the Affordable Housing Action Plan 2019-2023, the Tasmanian Government will: invest in new homeless accommodation for men with or without accompanying children and homeless youth accommodation in the North West; expand Magnolia House in Launceston to increase support for women to move out of crisis and into stable accommodation and provide short-term accommodation for young people in the North; and co-invest in new homeless accommodation for older men, women with or without accompanying children, and men in the South.
- Invest in crisis accommodation through the Affordable Housing Action Plan 2019-2023 is an action under Safe Homes, Families, Communities: Tasmania’s action plan for family and sexual violence 2019-2022 (Safe Homes, Families, Communities), which invests $26 million over three years from 2019-20 to 2021-22 to prevent and respond to family and sexual violence in Tasmania.
What have we achieved so far?
Safe Homes, Families, Communities commenced implementation on 1 July 2019.
From 1 July 2019, work has commenced on planning the design and delivery of services and properties to provide the additional crisis accommodation outlined in the Affordable Housing Action Plan 2019-2023.
Under Safe Homes, Families, Communities and the Affordable Housing Action Plan 2, the Government has invested in dedicated crisis accommodation through:
- expanding Magnolia Place in Launceston to increase support for women in the North to move out of crisis and into stable accommodation
- expanding Jireh House to increase crisis accommodation for women in the South
- new homeless accommodation for men with or without accompanying children and homeless youth accommodation in the North West
- co-investing in new homeless accommodation for men in the South through the new Southern Men’s Supported Accommodation Facility run by Bethlehem House on the site of the former Waratah Hotel).
What is next?
The Tasmanian Government will continue the construction of new properties through the Affordable Housing Action Plan 2019-2021.
In 2021, the Government has committed funding a feasibility study into a crisis accommodation facility in the Northern Midlands for women affected by family violence. The feasibility study has commenced with a report expected in 2022.
What difference will we make?
The Tasmanian Government is committed to supporting families affected by violence and ensuring the service system is responsive, integrated and innovative. Through this initiative, families affected by family violence have access to crisis accommodation to escape violent homes.
By investing in crisis accommodation through the Affordable Housing Action Plan 2019–2023, families experiencing family violence continue to be supported through the Rapid Rehousing initiative, by partnering with the community sector to head-lease suitable and affordable private rental properties.
