Culturally appropriate women’s safety contact program

Responsible government

  • South Australia

Fourth Action Plan actions

  • Support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their children
    • 8 Develop innovative and alternative models for victim and perpetrator support that contribute to safe healing and sustainable behaviour change.

What are we doing?

This initiative will ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are engaged with in a culturally appropriate way through the women’s safety contact program.

What is next?

The South Australian Government is working with agencies currently delivering the women’s safety contact program to explore options to provide a culturally appropriate program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

Culturally appropriate models are being considered, and service learnings from COVID-19 responses will inform this work.

A review of post criminal justice system perpetrator interventions was scheduled to occur mid 2020 which would have incorporated discussion about a culturally appropriate women’s safety contact program. This has been delayed due to COVID-19 however this review will commence later in 2020.

What difference will we make?

The women’s safety contact program aims to increase the safety of women who have experienced domestic or Aboriginal family violence, have a current intervention order, and are not otherwise engaged with a specialist domestic and family violence support service.
